Project Details:

The Newly refurbished Pelham Campus at the Blackpool & Fylde College in Blackpool required a new and more appropriately safer entrance, car park and drop off facility to suit the greater volume of students, faculty and visitors.

The Scheme was designed using a newly procured derelict property and an adjacent piece of land. (see below pictures of before and after)

The scheme itself had many challenges as the campus had to remain fully functioning throughout the works even during the demolition of an existing building which sat in the footprint of the new entrance. Special care had to be taken with the planning in terms of traffic/pedestrian management, dust & noise control and the presence of asbestos within the site area which the whole construction and design team worked tireless to achieve with no complaints or accidents throughout the 20 week project.

As a whole the scheme incorporated 5,000m² of the new ULTIDRIVE Tarmac product that combines the strength of a polymer surfacing with porous properties to ensure that the surface water is removed to the below ground system very quickly.  The underground drainage was all installed with porous pipes, incorporating a series of silt traps, a large attenuation cell and Hydrobrake so as not to put additional strain of the existing highway surface water network.

A 2500m² section of permeable block paving was also installed at Bennett Avenue as a pedestrianized area/ access road along with a large planting scheme to provide a more aesthetically pleasing & safer entrance to the University building.

A large electrical upgrade had to be installed for the scheme for the new LED lighting system, new CCTV system and smart key barrier control.
